Honoring Those Who Protect and Serve Every Day

Jul 28, 2017

Law Enforcement Appreciation NightAs those who risk their lives every day in order to provide protection and safety for us all, and who in a very real sense are never truly off duty as long as they serve, more is asked of our law enforcement family than that of almost any other profession. We can think of few groups as deserving of our gratitude and support as our peace officers, nor of few that are more in need of the support of the communities they work so hard to protect in order to do their jobs most effectively. For those who want to do more to support law enforcement, we’ve highlighted several important community events and organizations dedicated to helping those who put everything on the line in the interest of public safety and security:

Recapping Law Enforcement Appreciation Night: It was an exhilarating evening for those who got out to AT&T Park on Tuesday for Law Enforcement Appreciation Night to see the Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in one of the home team’s best games of the season.  Law Enforcement Appreciation Night gives thanks to the men and women who put themselves in harm’s way to protect and serve our communities, and pays tribute to those who have laid down their lives in the line of duty. Proceeds from the ticket sales benefit law enforcement families that have suffered a loss of life or a serious injury or illness.

Make a donation any time of the year: Not a big fan of attending sports events or simply not able to make it out to the games? Don’t let this stop you from giving back to members of law enforcement and their families who have endured a major loss via worthy organizations like the California Peace Officers’ Memorial Foundation (CPOMF) and the Bay Area Law Enforcement Assistance Fund (BALEAF).

Don’t miss First Responder Appreciation Day: Didn’t get out to Law Enforcement Appreciation Night this year and wish you had been part of the camaraderie and fun? For the first time this year, the San Francisco 49ers are partnering with Bay Area Law Enforcement Fund to present First Responder Appreciation Day in the fall. Your donation of $75 gets you a ticket to see the 49ers take on the Seattle Seahawks at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday, November 26. Proceeds from ticket sales help Bay Area First Responders and their families who have experienced a line of duty death, catastrophic event or major illness. Look for upcoming information on how to purchase tickets for the event at http://www.baleaf.org/upcoming-events/.

Mark your calendar for Tuesday’s National Night Out: Don’t forget that police agencies throughout the country will be hosting National Night Out (NNO) in their communities next Tuesday, August 1. Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, this evening of activities, food and fun was created to strengthen the relationship between police and communities to make our neighborhoods safer places to live. This year, SFPCU will take part at Taraval Police Station’s Event at Playland, 1360 43rd Avenue, San Francisco, from 5-8 p.m. To find a National Night Out near you, check your city’s website. Learn more about National Night Out at https://natw.org/.

Observe Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day: A day of remembrance honoring our fallen officers across the nation, May 15 was declared Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which it falls as National Police Week by President Kennedy in 1962. In our state, California Peace Officers Memorial Ceremonies are currently held the first week of May in Sacramento on State Capitol grounds. Each year, SFPCU attends this two-day event to pay tribute to those officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, and to show support for the families left behind.

National Police Week is also an excellent time for those of us who are civilians to take time out to say thank you to members of law enforcement. But of course, any time of the year is appropriate to express gratitude to those who risk their lives and work tirelessly for the safety and security of us all. Not quite sure of the right way to say thank you to a member of law enforcement? A simple, “Thank you for your service,” is one way to do it.
