Managing finances online offers convenience, but it also requires strong security habits to protect personal and financial information. With over 600 million cyber attacks per day around the world, protecting your digital information is more important than ever before, especially for law enforcement members and their families. Safeguarding your accounts helps prevent fraud, identity theft, and unnecessary stress. By following proven online security best practices, credit union members can reduce risk and maintain confidence when accessing financial information digitally.

Why Online Security Matters More Than Ever

Cyber threats continue to evolve, and criminals increasingly target financial accounts through phishing, malware, and identity theft. Even cautious users can be vulnerable if security habits are outdated or inconsistent.

Strong online security protects your personal information, financial accounts, credit history, and peace of mind. For police families, maintaining secure financial access is an essential part of overall preparedness.

Use Strong and Unique Passwords

Passwords are your first line of defense. Weak or reused passwords make accounts easier to compromise.

Best practices for passwords include:

  • Use a long password with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols
  • Avoid using names, birthdays, or badge numbers
  • Do not reuse the same password across multiple sites
  • Update passwords regularly
  • Store passwords securely using a trusted password manager

Creating strong passwords reduces the risk of unauthorized access.

Enable Multi-Factor Authentication Whenever Possible

Multi-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification. This may include a code sent to your phone, an email confirmation, or biometric identification. Most websites and financial institutions require the use of two-factor authentication, and passkeys are becoming more and more common as well.

Even if a password is compromised, multi-factor authentication helps prevent criminals from accessing your account. Members should enable this feature on all financial and personal accounts whenever available.

Be Cautious With Emails, Texts, and Phone Calls

Phishing scams are one of the most common ways criminals attempt to gain access to financial information. These messages may appear legitimate and urgent.

Warning signs include requests for passwords, messages claiming immediate action is needed, strange links or attachments, misspellings, and unfamiliar sender addresses. Never click links or provide personal information without verifying the source. When in doubt, contact the credit union directly using a trusted phone number.

Protect Your Devices

Your phone, tablet, and computer are gateways to your financial information. Keeping them secure is just as important as protecting your accounts.

Steps to protect your devices include using antivirus software, locking devices with strong passcodes, and avoiding downloading unknown apps or files. Many devices have remote wiping capabilities that can help protect your information if your device goes missing or is stolen. These measures help prevent unauthorized access if a device is lost or compromised.

Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Financial Activity

Public Wi-Fi networks are convenient but often unsecured. Criminals can intercept data transmitted over these networks.

When accessing financial information, avoid using public wi-fi networks when possible. Instead, use a secure home network or secure mobile hotspot if needed. Using secure connections helps protect sensitive information from interception.

Monitor Accounts Regularly

Regular monitoring allows you to catch suspicious activity early. Set up customized alerts with TPCU’s Digital Banking card management tools to stay one step ahead of fraud. You can receive real-time notifications for purchases, unusual activity, or changes to your account, allowing you to take action immediately if something doesn’t look right. These alerts help you spot unrecognized transactions, small test charges, or unexpected account changes faster. The sooner suspicious activity is identified, the easier it is to resolve issues and limit potential damage.

Protect Personal Information Outside of Financial Accounts

Online security extends beyond banking. Social media, email accounts, and online shopping profiles often contain personal information that criminals can exploit.

Protect yourself by limiting personal information shared online, setting your social media accounts to private, and reviewing your privacy settings regularly. Strong personal data protection reduces the risk of identity theft.

Know What to Do If You Suspect Fraud

Quick action is critical if you believe your information has been compromised.

If you notice suspicious activity:

  • Contact your credit union immediately
  • Change passwords on affected accounts
  • Monitor credit reports
  • Document all suspicious activity

The Police Credit Union is  experienced in handling security concerns and can help guide members through the next steps.

Security Is an Ongoing Commitment

Online security is not a one-time task. It requires regular attention, updates, and vigilance. By practicing good security habits consistently, credit union members can reduce risk and maintain confidence in managing their finances digitally. Strong security protects not only your accounts, but also your family’s financial stability.
